Ski mountaineering in the High Peaks. Depending on the actual weather and conditions that weekend- we'll set our sights on a progression of objectives that could range anywhere from light & fast ski tours, practicing technical mountaineering skills with crampons and axes, a summit tour or skinning for untracked powder laps- and anything in between!
In 2011, Jason' Stunt' Weiner and 'JV' Vandenberghe joined us for the inaugural event and were rewarded with two days of fresh snow as the backcountry season kicked into full swing. We skinned, climbed and skied for several thousand feet of untouched snow on the Angel Slides on the first day. On the second day- with strong winds and snow coming in above treeline, we committed to a hidden drainage on another, less well-known aspect of Wright Peak. This required some 'barkeatering' at the entrance, but yielded good rewards the rest of the way down and out! Check out the video:
Prerequisites.
In order to get the most out of the weekend, skiers are asked to arrive with: a) advanced-expert downhill ski ability- the ability to confidently (or at least with effective control) ski black diamond terrain at any major resort, b) some prior experience skiing on backcountry or sidecountry (off-piste/ ungroomed) terrain, and c) the fitness to hike and ski in the backcountry all day long- for successive days. No refunds will be given for last-minute cancellations. A flexible itinerary will allow us to make the most of all but the worst conditions.
Guides.
Regional Dynafit ambassador athlete and AMGA Alpine and Rock Guide Jesse Williams from Cloudsplitter Mountain Guides in Keene Valley, will lead the ski camp. Mike 'Kaz' Kazmierczek will join us as lead technical and marketing representative from Dynafit North America. (We may be joined by additional AMGA or IFMGA guides as necessary.)
$699. Room and board included.
Lodging (private room with shared bath at local rental vacation home), family-style breakfasts and dinners (food, not alcohol) are provided on Friday and Saturday nights. (Trail food is NOT included. Whiteface lift tickets are purchased individually by the participant on Friday afternoon.)
Registration.
Advance reservation and a non-refundable deposit of $299 is required. In the (unlikely) event of a cancellation (at the guide's discretion), credit for future Cloudsplitter programs may be given.
